Understanding Dementia: How to Create a Supportive Environment
Dementia, a collective term for cognitive impairments affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities, poses a significant public health challenge worldwide. Dementia can cause issues like memory loss, increased feelings of depression and anxiety, trouble with communication, disorientation and other such cognitive and psychological changes that very often result in affecting a person's feelings, behaviour, and relationships. In India, approximately 8.8 million individuals aged 60 and above are living with dementia, representing a prevalence rate of 7.4% in this age group. Notably, the prevalence is higher among females and in rural areas, with considerable variation across different states (Alzheimer’s Association, 2023).
Why is a Supportive Environment important for people suffering from dementia?
Creating a Supportive Environment is crucial for enhancing the quality of life for individuals with dementia. They promote safety, independence, and overall well-being, thereby mitigating some of the challenges associated with the condition, including:
● Clutter: Individuals may forget family members, struggle to recognize their home, or repeat questions, causing anxiety and frustration.
● Wandering & Safety Risks: Dementia patients may leave home unnoticed, forgetting their destination, increasing the risk of falls, accidents, or getting lost.
● Communication Difficulties: Struggling to find words, follow conversations, or express needs can lead to withdrawal, misunderstandings, and increased dependency on caregivers.
● Emotional & Behavioral Changes: Sudden mood swings, aggression, restlessness, or depression may arise, often triggered by changes in environment, routine, or overstimulation.
